IPhone 3GS Handsets Overheat, Turn Brown

IPhone 3GS Handsets Overheat, Turn Brown

The iPhone 3G may, at least for some users, have an additional, undocumented feature: It can be used to toast bread. Reports are coming in that the new, million-selling iPhone is suffering from overheating issues. The handsets are getting so warm, in fact, that the plastic cases of the white models are discoloring to pink. The picture above is from Ben on the French site Le Journal du Geek. It’s not just anonymous forum posters, either. Melissa J. Perenson of PC World has a toasty 3GS, too: QUOTE And at some point, I became aware the handset had become very hot. Very, very hot — not just on the back, but the entire length of the front face, too. I was using a game, and then later the Web browser for reading the news about Michael Jackson, all over a Wi-Fi connection while plugged in. And in those circumstances, well…toasty doesn’t even describe how surprisingly hot it got. It was too hot to even put the phone against my face. No discoloration to report, though; I have the black handset, and didn’t see any effects. Other reports across the web, including the Apple discussion forums, seem to point at GPS use and playing games as the culprits. Of course, there are problems with product launches all the time, and Apple users tend to be more vocal than most. And Apple is notoriously retic ... |

Survey: Modern Warfare 2 Loses Brand Awareness Without 'Call of Duty'

Survey: Modern Warfare 2 Loses Brand Awareness Without 'Call of Duty'

Activision and Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 not only dropped the the Call of Duty moniker, but a sizable chunk of brand recognition, tracking firm OTX tells Gamasutra. Consumer awareness levels for the highly-anticipated military mega-sequel dropped 20 percentage points since Activision revealed the official name of the game would ditch the Call of Duty brand, according to Nick Williams, who runs the GamePlan Insights division for OTX. "Up until the beginning of May, OTX had been tracking the title as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. More specifically, we asked a representative group of gamers in the U.S. whether or not they had heard of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. At that time, approximately 40 percent of all gamers in the U.S. claimed that they had heard of this title." He continued, "However, once it became clear that Activision was positioning the title as Modern Warfare 2, OTX removed 'Call of Duty' from the consumer survey, and the awareness levels dropped to 20 percent. In other words, the Call of Duty brand association essentially doubles the awareness for the game. That is quite a remarkable statistic." Following the industry extravaganza E3 in early June, OTX found that consumers' purchase intent for Modern Warfare 2 ranked high on the research firm's top 50 most anticipated games list, but still behind games including Bu ... |

Windows XP extended yet again to (possibly) 2011

Windows XP extended yet again to (possibly) 2011

Like Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part III, just when you think Windows XP is out... they pull it back in. Once again -- and I've now lost count on this one -- Microsoft is officially extending the life of the venerable Windows XP operating system. Based on the company's new rules, the OS can be pre-installed on machines for up to 18 months after the general availability of Windows 7 -- or until Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is released, whichever is sooner. Assuming Windows 7 ships in October as planned, that means XP may be alive and well until April 2011. On the other hand, Microsoft has been releasing Service Packs more quickly of late, and 18 months would be an awfully long time for Windows to go without a patch. The move was apparently a response to Gartner's Michael Silver, who lambasted the company's previous policy, which would create only six months of overlap between XP and Windows 7, and which he saw as not enough time for large enterprises to manage the transition from one OS to the other. (And let's get real: No one is going to upgrade to Vista in the meantime.) In response, Silver called the new policy "good" but "still not great." His beef? Microsoft's Service Pack clause, which is as nebulous a term as one can fathom. Service Packs are really nothing more than bundled up collections of bug fixes, and there are no ... |

Activision to Sony: Lower PS3 Costs or we will stop making games.

Activision Blizzard President and CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement earlier that he plans to abandon Sony's PS3 and PSP platforms unless Sony drops the PS3's price and reduced its licensing fees. Sony's reaction: we're not reacting on that one. Speaking to the Times Online, Kotick said that his company's main concern right now is Sony: QUOTE I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation. They have to cut the price, because if they don’t, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony. When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too. Kotick added that Activision Blizzard paid Sony US$ 500 million in royalties and other goods last year, which probably still worked out at 400 percent of the profit they made. SCEE, for their end, has issued a statement regarding the matter: |

Apple delivers prodigious patch batch for iPhone with OS update

Apple delivers prodigious patch batch for iPhone with OS update

Computerworld - Apple yesterday patched 46 security vulnerabilities, half of them in the Safari browser and its WebKit rendering engine, for the iPhone and iPod Touch as it released iPhone OS 3.0. The company fixed nearly four times the number of flaws Wednesday than when it last patched the iPhone software. In November 2008, Apple issued a security update alongside iPhone 2.2 that plugged 12 holes. Almost half of the vulnerabilities -- 21 all told -- were tagged with Apple's usual "arbitrary code execution" phrase, lingo that essentially means that the bug is critical and could be used to compromise the device. Unlike other major software makers, such as rival operating system developer Microsoft and database giant Oracle, Apple doesn't rank vulnerabilities using a scoring system. Not surprisingly, 50% of the patches apply to bugs in Safari, the iPhone and iPod Touch's browser, or WebKit, the open-source browser engine that Apple uses as Safari's foundation. Safari and WebKit have been the focus of most research into iPhone hacks. The first reported iPhone bug, for example, was a Safari flaw found by a trio of researchers, including Charlie Miller, formerly with the National Security Agency, in July 2007. Twenty-one of the 23 browser-related bugs that Apple patched yesterday were in WebKit code; the remaining two were in Safari itself. Among the former were ... |

iPhone SiriusXM application to be released Thursday

iPhone SiriusXM application to be released Thursday

Just in case a new iPhone model and OS 3.0 weren't enough goodies for this week, Sirius XM support team members are sending emails out announcing the company's long-awaited iPhone / iPod touch app will finally seeing the light of day and will launch this Thursday, June 18th. We just got off the phone with a customer service rep who confirmed the letters are legit, so unless there's some communication breakdown on the corporate ladder, looks like it's really, finally coming. It'll be available as a free download from the App Store, but those who subscribe to the gratis Basic Online Service will have to upgrade to the $2.99 monthly premium plan to have it on the go. We're a bit light on other details -- we can't imagine it being as full-featured as the standalone receivers -- but it's a good bet we'll have all our questions answered before the week is out.
